妙心寺は、無相大師・関山慧玄（むそうたいし・かんざん えげん）が御開山の、臨済宗・妙心寺派の大本山です。
境内案内図です。境内には４０以上もの塔頭寺院と末寺があり、それぞれ龍泉派、東海派、霊雲派、聖澤派の四派に属しています。
駐車場の入り口は、妙心寺道・上ノ下立売通（みょうしんじみち・かみのしもだちうりどおり）沿い、花園会館の西側にあります。
妙心寺道を西に歩いて行くと、勅使門（ちょくし もん）と、南総門（みなみ そうもん）が見えてきます。
勅使門の裏側に放生池があります。
放生池の先に、三門（さんもん）こと三解脱門（さん げだつ もん）があります。
三門から、仏殿、法堂、大方丈が一直線上に並ぶのが禅宗の様式です。
三門の隣に、重要文化財の浴室があります。この浴室は、明智光秀の叔父が菩提を弔うために建立したもので、明智風呂の別名を持ちます。
御開山の無相大師以降、二祖・授翁宗弼、三祖・無因宗因、四祖・日峰宗舜、五祖・義天玄承、六祖・雪江宗深までの法嗣を六祖とし、関連する塔頭寺院を六祖道場と呼称しています。
妙心寺の北総門です。バスで参拝する際は、こちらの門から入る形になります。
因みに、三祖・無因宗因禅師は、一休さんこと一休宗純禅師が師事した謙翁宗為（けんおう そうい）の師です。
