東北寺は至道無難(しどう むなん)禅師が開山した臨済宗・妙心寺派の禅寺で、かつては長野県の正受庵（しょうじゅ あん）、愛知県の輝東庵（きとう あん）と共に、天下三庵（てんか さんあん）の一つに数えられていました。
東北寺は澁谷の住宅地にあるので、自動車で来るのは少々大変です。
参道に入ってすぐの所に、一葉菩薩？の像がありました。
東北寺の山門(さんもん)です。
扁額(へんがく)には、山号の禅河山(ぜんがさん)と揮毫されています。
山門の右側に道があり、その先は駐車場になっています。
僧侶の住居である庫裏(くり)は、最近建て直されたようです。
写真中央に方丈(ほうじょう)と書かれた額が見えます。本来、方丈は住職が住む部屋の名ですが、今では本堂(ほんどう)と同じ意味になっています。
方丈の塀の前に、仏像と三猿の石像がありました。
方丈を正面から。と言っても、上の部分しか見えませんが。
方丈の屋根を墓地から望みます。
方丈が見える所に、至道無難禅師の無縫塔があります。案内も何も無かったので、墓地中を探し回ってしまいました。
至道無難禅師は麻布に東北庵(とうほく あん)を構え、その後、小石川（今の文京区）に天下三庵と名高い至道庵(しどう あん)を建立します。禅師が亡くなった後、東北寺と名を改めて、この地に移転したという記録が残っています。
正受老人（しょうじゅろうじん）こと道鏡慧端（どうきょう えたん）禅師は、東北庵(とうほく あん)で出家し、修行の後に至道無難禅師から正受(しょうじゅ)の扁額を与えられて正受庵(しょうじゅ あん)を構えました。
臨済宗・中興の祖と名高い白隠慧鶴禅師は、正受庵で修行して応・燈・関の法脈を嗣いでいます。
天下三庵・輝東庵は妙心寺派の禅寺であり、犬山・瑞泉寺（ずいせんじ）の塔頭寺院です。
