むかしむかし、百丈懐海（ひゃくじょう えかい）禅師は弟子の中から法嗣を選ぶ為に、ちょっと変わった質問をしました。百丈禅師は木製の浄瓶（じょうへい・水差し）を地面に置き、皆に「浄瓶を浄瓶と呼んではならないなら、何と呼ぶべきか？」と問いかけたのです。
高弟の代表格である首座（しゅそ）は「木片と呼ぶわけにはいかないもの」と答えましたが、典座（炊事係）は浄瓶を蹴り倒していきました。百丈禅師は、典座を務める潙山霊祐（いざん れいゆう）を法嗣に選んだそうです。
老僧「・・・とまあ、これが無門関・第四十則の趯倒浄瓶（てきとう じんびん）という公案のあらすじだ。」
小僧「うーん、いかにも公案という感じの話ですねぇ・・・。」
老僧「そうだな。傍から見れば、水差しを蹴っ飛ばした行儀の悪い男が後継者に選ばれたのだから、訳が分からんだろうな。」
小僧「何と言いますか、禅宗の人って乱暴じゃないですか？」
老僧「うむ、みんながみんなこうではないが、確かにバイオレンスな人が多い感じがするな。」
小僧「みんながみんな師匠みたいに優しければ、仏教と言えば禅宗みたいになったと思います！」
老僧「専修道場はともかく、一般人が参加する坐禅会の主催者は優しい人が多いぞ。じゃないと赤字になるからな。」
小僧「せ、世知辛い話ですね、それ（汗）」
老僧「もはや厳しくしても人が就いてくる時代では無いのだ。ならば指導者が変わるより他はあるまい。」
小僧「でも、舐められてしまったら、指導どころでは無いような気がします！」
老僧「わしとしては、指導者を舐めるような志（こころざし）の低い人間には、金払いの良いお客様になっていただくのも手だと思うがな。」
小僧「お客様は神様って奴ですか？ ボクはその考え方が嫌いです！」
老僧「優しくすべき人には優しくするし、厳しくした方が良い人には厳しくするというだけの話だよ。みんながみんな、百丈禅師や潙山禅師のようになれる訳でも無いしな。」
小僧「うぅ・・・、何で人間関係って、こんなに面倒臭いんですか！！」
老僧「我々の悩みは殆どが人間関係の悩みだし、繊細で傷つき易い人ほど悩みが尽きない。だから強くなりたいと願うのだが、その『強さ』という奴がクセモノだ。」
小僧「人として強くなろうとするのは、ダメなのでしょうか？」
老僧「ダメではないのだが、強さに依存すると観察力や共感性を失う事になるから、悩みの形が変わるだけで根本的な解決にはならないんだよ。」
小僧「強さと鈍さは紙一重って事ですか・・・。」
老僧「繊細さは鋭敏さでもあるから、観察力や共感性を磨く方向で努力すれば良い。だが、他人の繊細さを嘲笑う人が近くに居ると、それが難しくなるのも事実だ。」
小僧「そう言えば、イジメっ子って共感性がゼロに近いですよね。」
老僧「彼らは共感性の鈍さを、凶暴さという強みに変えているんだよ。何せ、イジメる相手に共感していたら、イジメを楽しめないからな。」
小僧「酷い話です！最低です！！」
老僧「学校や会社などという所は、無作為に集めた人材を管理をする場所に過ぎないからな。だから別にみんなと仲良くする必要は無いし、そもそもそんな事は出来やしない。友だちが百人出来たら、敵は千人出来ると考えた方が良いくらいだ。」
小僧「ヒエッ・・・。」
老僧「百丈禅師は潙山禅師を選んだが、理屈に走った首座とその仲間達は『清らかな仏具を蹴り倒すような輩に負けて恥をかかされた』と考えて、それ以降は敵に回った可能性が高い。」
小僧「男の嫉妬はみっともないけど、ボクにも潙山禅師が選ばれた理由が分かりません！」
老僧「潙山禅師は『瓶』という名詞と『浄』という形容詞と共に、『法嗣の座』もワンアクションで蹴り倒したのだよ。それだけの力量があったからこそ、弟子の仰山慧寂(きょうざん えじゃく)禅師と共に、五家七宗の一つに数えられる潙仰(いぎょう)宗を開く事が出来たのだ。」
小僧「ふぇぇ、そんな意味があったのですか。」
老僧「一休宗純禅師も、師の華叟宗曇（かそう そうどん）禅師から授かった印可証（いんかしょう・悟りの証明書）を破り捨てたと聞く。それは師の威光に頼らないという覚悟の表れだ。」
小僧「なるほど・・・。」
老僧「潙山禅師には、仲間の数にも、師の権威にも頼らず、自らの道を往くだけの強さがあった。一休禅師も破戒僧なのに、多くの人々に愛されている。」
小僧「それが本当の強さなんですね！」
老僧「本当の強さには形容詞をつけられない。それを無為・無心の強さと表現する事も出来なくはないが、無いものには何の力も無い。分かり難い話ではあるがな。」
小僧「エッ！？ そ、そうなんですか・・・？」
老僧「覚者は強者では無く、むしろ戦意の欠片も無い地上最弱の生物なんだよ。だが、恐れるものや失いものが無いから、強く見えるのだ。」
小僧「何か『無敵の人』みたいですね・・・。」
老僧「覚者は我執と、自己憐憫を捨てている。そこが『無敵の人』との最大の違いだ。」
小僧「なるほど、本当の意味での無一物（むいちもつ）って訳ですか！」
老僧「そうだ。潙山禅師は浄瓶よろしく、とっくの昔に自我も蹴り倒し、自己とは呼べぬ自己を生きていた。非在なる者でなければ、百丈禅師の法を嗣（つ）ぐ事など出来はしないのだ。」
小僧「なるほど、納得です！」
老僧「因みに、浄瓶を『木片と呼ぶわけにはいかないもの』と言った首座の悟りも、かなりのものだ。一般人でここまで悟れば、人生など春風のようなものだろうよ。」
小僧「首座さんも凄い人だったんですね！」
老僧「百丈禅師は弟子に恵まれた。もちろん、それは禅師の力量も関係しているとは思うがな。」
小僧「連綿と続く法脈のおかげで、ボク達も禅の教えを学べるんですね！」
老僧「そうだな、本当にありがたい事だ。」
小僧「はい！」
