昔、昔の事じゃった。とある中国の寺に、有名な坊さんがおったそうな。そして、この坊さんが説法をする時には、毎回来る老人が居たそうな。普段は説法が終わると、その老人も他の人達と一緒に寺を出て行くのだが、ある日、何故か居残った。疑問に思った坊さんは、その老人に話しかけてみたのだった。
坊主「やあやあ、いつも私の話を聞いてくれて、ありがとう。しかし何故、今日に限って帰ろうとせんのかね？ ひょっとして、何か私に聞きたい事でもあるのかな？ 」
老人「はい。実はそうなのですじゃ。」
坊主「ふむ。ではまず、貴方が何処の誰かを教えてはくれまいか。どうやら、この村の者では無いようだが。」
老人「それが・・・わしは村の者どころか、今や人間でさえありませぬのじゃ。」
坊主「むむ？ 今や、とはどういう意味かね？」
老人「もう、かなり昔の話になりますじゃ。かつてわしは、この寺の住職を務めておった者ですじゃ。ある時、一人の雲水が訪れて、私に質問をしてきたのですじゃ。それがまた恐ろしく難しい質問あったので、情けない事に、わしには上手く答えられなかったのですじゃ・・・。」
坊主「ふむ・・・。その質問とは、どのようなものだったのかね？」
老人「それは、修行して大悟した者が、因果律の制約を受けるか否かというものですじゃ。」
坊主「ほほう。で、どう答えなすったのかね？」
老人「咄嗟に、不落因果（因果の制約を受けない）と答えてしもうたのですじゃ。」
坊主「む、そう言い切ってしまったのかね。」
老人「はい。そう答えた瞬間、わしは野弧に堕ちてしまい、それから五百回も野弧に生まれ変わって、今日に至る始末ですじゃ・・・（涙）」
坊主「なんとまあ・・・。道理で熱心に私の話を聞いていた訳だ。」
老人「お願いですじゃ。どうか正しい見解をお示し頂き、この野弧めをお救いくだされぇ！」
坊主「分かりました。では、今から私の言う事を、良く聞いてください。」
老人「は、はいですじゃ！」
坊主「貴方が不落因果（因果の制約を受けない）と言ったのであれば、私は不眛因果（因果の法則をくらますことはできない）と言いましょう。」
老人「・・・不眛因果、ですかの？」
坊主「左様。」
老人「あの、恥ずかしながら、わしには不落と不眛の違いが、良く分からんですじゃ・・・。」
坊主「問題は、そこではありません。」
老人「え？！」
坊主「これは言い方や、用いる言葉の問題ではないのです。」
老人「な・・・何やら狐につままれたような気分ですじゃ（汗）」
坊主「分かり難いなら、質問を変えてみましょうか。」
老人「は、はい。お願いしますじゃ。」
坊主「そうですな・・・地獄と極楽を例に出せば、多少は分り易くなるかも知れません。」
老人「地獄と極楽、ですかの？」
坊主「左様。では、地獄と極楽は、何処にありますかな？」
老人「あの世にあると言われていたり、心の中にあると言われていたりと、諸説ありますじゃ。」
坊主「その話は、自分自身で確かめてきたのですかな？」
老人「いえ、まさか。」
坊主「では何故、不落因果などと言い切ってしまったのですかな？」
老人「あっ！！」
坊主「左様、左様。どうやらお分かり頂けたようですな。」
老人「そ、そうか・・・そういう事だったのですな！！」
坊主「例え不落と言おうが、不眛と言おうが、同じ事です。当時の貴方では、野弧に堕ちるより他は無かった。」
老人「その通りですじゃ！ 問題なのは、言い方や、用いる言葉では無いですじゃ！！」
坊主「野弧に堕ちて、苦しみ抜いた事は哀れに思います。ですが・・・。」
老人「はい、その経験が無ければ、今はありませぬ！！」
坊主「左様、左様。本当に、おめでとうございました。」
老人「ありがとうございますですじゃ！ ・・・そうか、不昧とはそういう意味じゃったか。」
坊主「ほう、不昧の意味も理解されましたか。それは重畳。」
老人「はい。分からない事は分からない、と言うだけの事ですじゃ。」
坊主「左様。地獄と極楽は何処かと問われて、明言できる者など居はしません。」
老人「断見（だんけん）に、常見（じょうけん）。どちらも偏見ですじゃ。故に、どちらかを明言すれば、因果を昧（くら）ます事になるのですじゃ。」
坊主「フッフフ、どうやら本当に野弧の身から解脱されたようですな。ようございました。」
老人「ありがたや、ありがたや。長いこと迷うておりましたが、おかげさまで救われましたのじゃ。」
そして老人は、坊さんに深く深く礼拝してから去って行った。後日、坊さんは寺の裏山で狐の亡骸を発見し、手厚く葬ったという。
